If you missed the last part of our Samantha dress sewalong ‘Making the darts and sewing the shoulder seams, click here to catch up.
In this part, we are going to attach the neckline binding and collar. Quick tip: if you are making version 1, without the collar, the construction of the neckline binding is exactly the same, you just don’t attach the collar.
Constructing the neckline binding
You must have cut two identical pieces for your neckline binding. First of all, we need to join them to create one long piece. Place the short ends of your neckline binding right sides together and stitch them using a zigzag stitch or your overlocker. Press the seam allowances open (if you used a sewing machine) or to one side (if you used an overlocker)
Now fold the neckline binding in half lengthways, with wrong sides facing, and press really well.
Constructing the collar
Making your collar is actually very, very easy. Put the collar pieces one on top of the other, right sides together and secure them in place with pins.
Starting from one end and pivoting at the corner, stitch all the way around the curved edge until you reach the other end. We made an illustration to help you understand it better.
Trim the seam allowance and snip off the corners to reduce bulk. Be careful not to cut into the seams.
Turn the collar inside out and give it a good press.
And that’s all for today. Join us next week for the next part of our sewalong, ‘Finishing the neckline’
